On the shores of Lake Como, the Grand Hotel Victoria Concept & Spa in Menaggio (Como) has undergone a major extension and renovation. The 1892 villa was completed with the addition of a new building, called “il Palazzo (the Palace)”.
The intervention signed by the Studio Pè Architettura & Design is characterised by a seamless harmony between the new and the old.
Thema has contributed to the integration between the historical and contemporary architecture, in particular with the transparent walkway about 30 metres long which concretises the union between the buildings. Thema has engineered and created a custom solution for the glazed path, thanks to a load-bearing structural work capable of supporting and integrating the façade system, the very large glass and curtains. In total, about 50 metres of transparent walkways were built between the connecting tunnel and the external glazed areas.
Thema has created ad hoc samples for all the custom solutions requested by the architect, such as the entrance door of the historic building, the sliding windows on the terraces of the rooms of the new wing, especially necessary for the opening systems with coplanar floors, and the complete renovation of the historic veranda of the Lago restaurant which opens entirely onto the lake front thanks to motorised systems. The fascinating original copper roof of the large veranda has been renewed. The rest has been completely redesigned with minimal motorised sliding doors flush with the floor conceived with the greatest possible length of the openings.
